I was told once, half-jokingly, in my residency training that I wasn’t cut out for the modern practice of psychiatry spending a few minutes with a rapid succession of patients I barely knew. Personally, I take that as a compliment, as a reminder of what our fragmented mental health care system has turned into and my insistence on doing something different. I like to talk to people, to dig deeply beyond the presenting symptoms and look for real long lasting solutions. I have seen truly life changing results from psychiatric medications and consider them an important tool in my tool box. The danger comes when it is the only tool in our tool box and we forget about the things that make life meaningful. We forget about the things that make us human. My own path to this point has been anything but a straight line, but the reality is every adventure, every mistake and surprise along the way made me who I am.
